Life at Sanjay Gandhi National Park witnessed a sorrowful moment as Bittu, a six-year-old male leopard, passed away on March 21, 2026, following a long struggle with illness despite continuous medical care.

Rescued as a tiny cub from the Yeoor range in Thane on December 4, 2019, Bittu had been hand-reared at the park’s rescue facility. Being only a few days old at the time of rescue, he required constant attention and was raised by a dedicated team of veterinarians and animal keepers. Over the years, he remained under close supervision, with his care financially supported by Minister Pratap Samaik, who had adopted the animal.

Health concerns began to surface a few months ago when Bittu started showing visible signs of illness. Veterinary teams immediately initiated treatment and kept him under strict observation, providing intensive supportive and symptomatic care. However, his condition gradually worsened over time.

Further medical evaluation, including ultrasonography (USG), revealed that Bittu was suffering from Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a severe condition that leads to the formation of multiple cysts in the kidneys and hampers their function. Despite sustained medical efforts, the disease continued to progress.

As the illness advanced, it led to systemic complications affecting multiple organs. Officials confirmed that Bittu ultimately succumbed to multiple organ failure caused by the worsening kidney condition.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the presence of numerous cysts in the kidneys, clearly indicating advanced renal disease. To ensure detailed investigation and confirmation, biological samples have been sent to Mumbai Veterinary College for further analysis. Forest officials stated that all necessary treatment protocols were carefully followed throughout the leopard’s illness and even after his death.
