The iconic title that captured the spirit of India’s calmest captain is now officially his.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has successfully secured approval to trademark the phrase ‘Captain Cool’, the beloved nickname that has long symbolised his composed and tactical leadership on the cricket field. The approval was confirmed by the Trade Marks Registry, and the trademark has now been advertised in the official journal dated June 16, 2025.

Dhoni has applied for exclusive rights to use the title ‘Captain Cool’ specifically for services related to sports coaching, training, and allied facilities. His intention is to formalise the moniker for commercial use in areas that reflect his deep-rooted association with the game and leadership excellence.

This move also comes amid growing interest in leveraging personal branding by sporting legends. Interestingly, the term had previously been trademarked by Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd, but their application now reflects a status of ‘rectification filed’, suggesting disputes or pending corrections, clearing the way for Dhoni’s claim.

The timing is particularly notable, as Dhoni was recently inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame (2025). The International Cricket Council (ICC), in its official announcement, lauded Dhoni for his “extraordinary consistency, fitness, and longevity,” calling him one of the game’s greatest finishers, tactical minds, and wicketkeepers.

From the 2007 T20 World Cup victory, to lifting the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, the nickname ‘Captain Cool’ came to reflect not just a calm demeanour, but also Dhoni’s unmatched poise in the most high-pressure moments in cricket history.

With this official recognition, the legacy of ‘Captain Cool’ is not just etched in cricketing lore, it’s now a registered brand.
