Pune, Hadapsar, 10 December 2025: Tension erupted at Sahyadri Hospital in Hadapsar after the relatives of a deceased patient allegedly vandalised parts of the facility, accusing the medical staff of negligence. Police have been deployed at the hospital and a detailed inquiry is underway, officials confirmed.

Hadapsar Police Inspector Sanjay Mogale stated that the patient passed away during treatment, which triggered anger among the family members, leading to damage within the premises. “We are working to identify those involved in the vandalism, and further investigation is ongoing,” Mogale said.

The deceased was the father of Ajay Sapkal, who heads the medical wing of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction in the city.

Sapkal has alleged that his father’s death resulted from improper medical care. Supporters accompanying him also gathered outside the hospital, demanding strict action against those responsible.

According to Sapkal, his father was admitted on November 28 around 12.30 pm for an ulcer surgery. “Doctors told us he would recover in two days. The operation was performed the same afternoon, and initially he showed positive signs,” Sapkal told the media.

He claimed that hospital staff later compelled his father to sit in a chair despite his fragile condition, which allegedly caused his stitches to reopen. “We were not given clear information. Multiple doctors visited, prescribed medications, but none explained the situation properly,” he said.

Sapkal further alleged that his father developed an infection, following which he was shifted to dialysis. “Around 8 am today, doctors said they needed to open his chest. Soon after that procedure, he passed away,” he added.

Expressing outrage, Sapkal said, “If my father faced this despite my position, one can imagine what common people must endure. We don’t know who damaged the hospital property, but exploitation here has become frequent. I will begin a hunger strike until stringent action is taken.”

Hospital Reacts:

Sahyadri hospital mentioned, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of the patient who was brought to our hospital with a critical medical condition that had led to multi-organ failure. The 76-year-old patient was admitted on 28th November after receiving initial treatment at another hospital in the city. Despite the extensive efforts of our team of expert doctors and the use of all appropriate, evidence-based medical protocols, his condition continued to deteriorate due to its extreme severity, and he, unfortunately, passed away today. All medical interventions and clinical decisions were taken strictly in line with established national and international guidelines for managing such high-risk cases. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and share in their grief during this difficult time. While we remain committed to supporting the family in every possible way, we strongly condemn the violent incident at the hospital and we are filing police complaint for the loss of property as it puts patients, their families, and healthcare staff at serious risk.”

Police said they are examining the allegations of negligence and working to identify those responsible for the vandalism.
