Pune: Wisteria CHS In Keshav Nagar Commissions 30 kW Smart Solar Plant On National Energy Conservation Day
Pune, December 15, 2025: Marking National Energy Conservation Day, Wisteria Cooperative Housing Society (CHS) in Keshavnagar, Mundhwa, has commissioned a 30 kW rooftop solar power plant equipped with a self-cleaning system, emerging as a model for sustainable and cost-effective energy adoption by housing societies in Pune.
The newly installed solar plant is expected to generate 130–140 units of electricity per day, translating to nearly 50,000 units annually. This is projected to reduce the society’s electricity expenditure by around ₹1 lakh per month, with an estimated payback period of 18 to 20 months. The project has effectively converted a portion of the society’s idle fixed deposits into a long-term infrastructure asset that benefits all residents.
From an environmental perspective, the installation is expected to cut nearly 40 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, save the equivalent of 2,000 trees, and prevent the burning of about 20 tonnes of coal each year.
To address efficiency losses caused by dust accumulation—a common issue in urban solar installations—Wisteria CHS has implemented a sprinkler-based self-cleaning system. The low-maintenance solution periodically cleans the panels, ensuring consistent power generation without reliance on daily manual cleaning. Provisions have also been kept for future automation upgrades.
The project uses advanced TOPCon (N-type) solar panels, offering higher efficiency, improved low-light performance, and lower degradation, making them suitable for Indian weather conditions. In line with the “Local Be Vocal” initiative, the society partnered with Equinox Solar, a local vendor, while using galvanised iron mounting structures for long-term durability.
Despite challenges such as space constraints, approvals, and equipment delays, the project was completed through collective decision-making and careful planning. Encouraged by the success, the society is now exploring future expansion to supply up to 100 units per flat per month through a peer-to-peer energy model, subject to feasibility and policy approvals.
The solar plant was inaugurated with traditional rituals, reflecting a blend of modern technology and cultural values.
This endeavour was envisioned and directed by the able leadership of Wisteria CHS, including the Chairman Major Dr Venkatesh Kulkarni, the secretary Vishwas Sawant, treasurer, Anjana Anil Kumar-Chotalia & other members including Ramdas Jadhav, Amit Narad, Mithun Polawar, Ganesh Rathod, Chandrashekhar Kushwaha, Varun Maheshwari, Sonkamle, and Priyanka Tharayil.
