SMS Scam Alert: What ‘P, G, T, S’ Codes Mean and How They Can Help You Avoid Fraud
Learn how to identify fraudulent SMS using P, G, T, S codes in India. Simple tips to stay safe from online scams and phishing messages.
With the rise in digital communication, incidents of SMS-based fraud have surged across India, prompting experts to urge mobile users to stay alert. Cybercriminals often send messages containing suspicious links, which can lead to financial losses if clicked. However, a simple detail at the end of an SMS can help users identify whether a message is legitimate or potentially fraudulent.
As per telecom regulations in India, all commercial and service-related SMS messages are categorized and marked with specific identifiers — namely P, G, T, or S — at the end of the sender ID. Understanding these codes can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to scams.
- G (Government): Messages marked with ‘G’ are sent by government agencies. These typically include alerts related to public welfare, schemes, or emergency notifications.
- T (Transactional): ‘T’ indicates transactional messages, usually sent by banks or financial institutions. These include OTPs, payment confirmations, and account updates.
- S (Service): Service-related messages marked with ‘S’ are sent by companies or brands, such as order updates from e-commerce platforms like Amazon or Flipkart.
- P (Promotional): Messages ending with ‘P’ are promotional in nature and include advertisements, offers, or marketing campaigns.
Cyber experts note that many fraudulent messages do not follow these classifications and may lack such identifiers. While not every message without a code is a scam, users are advised to exercise caution and avoid clicking on unknown links or sharing personal information.
To further reduce spam, users can activate the Do Not Disturb (DND) service through telecom apps. For instance, users can enable DND via the MyJio app, while customers of Airtel and Vodafone Idea can also access similar settings through their respective platforms.
