Pimpri-Chinchwad To Get 100 MLD Additional Water From Pavana Dam, Major Relief Expected
Pimpri-Chinchwad, March 25, 2026:Â In a significant relief for residents facing water shortages, the state government has approved the release of an additional 100 million litres per day (MLD) of water from the Pavana Dam to Pimpri-Chinchwad. The decision is expected to be implemented within the next 15 days, officials said.
The announcement came after sustained efforts by MLA Shankar Jagtap, who raised the issue prominently during the state assembly session. Following detailed discussions, Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil assured swift action to address the city’s growing water demand.
With Pimpri-Chinchwad’s population nearing 3.7 million and annual water consumption already high, the existing supply has been insufficient, leading to alternate-day water distribution in several areas. Officials said the additional allocation will help ease the situation, particularly during the summer months.
A high-level meeting held during the legislative session also reviewed the city’s long-term water needs. Based on a comparative assessment of demand and supply, the government cleared the proposal to draw extra water from Pavana Dam.
In addition to this, steps have been initiated to strengthen water infrastructure. Land measuring 0.95 hectares in Shirgaon, located in Maval taluka, will be permanently transferred to facilitate the development of key facilities such as a jackwell, approach channel, pump house, and substation. These installations are expected to streamline the supply of water from alternative sources like the Andra Dam.
Officials also confirmed plans to utilise additional water from the Bhama Askhed Dam and to construct a barrage system for improved water storage and treatment.
MLA Jagtap stated that consistent follow-up with the state government was crucial in securing the decision. He added that along with increasing supply, efforts are being made to improve wastewater treatment and reduce river pollution, ensuring sustainable water management for the growing city.
The combined measures are expected to significantly reduce water scarcity and provide much-needed relief to residents across Pimpri-Chinchwad.
