E85 Fuel Explained: Can E20 Cars Use It and What It Means for Vehicle Owners

What Is E85 Fuel?

E85 is a fuel made by mixing petrol with ethanol, a biofuel produced from crops such as sugarcane and maize. While regular petrol contains little or no ethanol, E85 contains up to 85% ethanol.

The government believes higher ethanol use can help reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil and lower pollution levels.

Can E20 Vehicles Use E85 Fuel?

No.

Vehicles designed for E20 fuel can safely run on petrol containing up to 20% ethanol. E85 contains much more ethanol and requires a specially designed engine and fuel system.

If E85 is filled in an E20 vehicle, it may lead to poor performance, engine trouble, fuel system damage, corrosion, and long-term reliability issues. Vehicle owners should always use the fuel recommended by the manufacturer.

Who Can Use E85 Fuel?

Only Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) can safely use E85 fuel.

These vehicles are specially built to run on different ethanol-petrol blends, ranging from E20 to E85 and even higher in some cases. They automatically adjust engine settings according to the fuel being used.

This allows drivers to switch between different fuel blends without affecting performance.

Which Flex-Fuel Vehicles Are Available?

India’s flex-fuel vehicle market is still developing, but a few models have already been introduced.

Hero MotoCorp recently launched flex-fuel versions of the Splendor+ and HF Deluxe motorcycles. Suzuki also offers a flex-fuel version of the Gixxer motorcycle. Maruti Suzuki has showcased a flex-fuel WagonR, although it is yet to be launched commercially.

More manufacturers are expected to introduce flex-fuel vehicles in the coming years.

Why Is the Government Promoting E85?

The government is encouraging the use of ethanol-blended fuels to reduce crude oil imports and increase the use of locally produced biofuels. The move is also expected to support farmers by creating greater demand for crops used in ethanol production.

Officials have said the fuel will initially be available at selected outlets before expanding to more cities and highways.

What Happens Next?

The launch of E85 indicates that India is moving towards higher ethanol-blended fuels. The government has already approved standards for other blends such as E22, E25, E27 and E30.
