Pune: PMC Begins Work On First Public Garden In Undri
Pune, June 9, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has commenced work on the first public garden in Undri, following sustained efforts and repeated representations by local resident foundation.
The proposed garden, which residents have requested to be named Sindoor Smriti Vatika, is being developed on a plot near Nyati Esteban Phase I in Undri. The project has been welcomed by residents of Undri and Mohammadwadi, who have long been demanding a dedicated green space for recreation and community activities.
The initiative was spearheaded by members of the Mohamadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation (MURWDF), who consistently highlighted the need for a safe and accessible public garden in the rapidly growing residential area. Residents pointed out that despite significant urban development, the locality lacked adequate spaces for walking, jogging, exercise and outdoor activities.

The demand for a public garden gained momentum after a tragic incident involving a retired Army officer who lost his life while on a morning run on a nearby road. The incident underscored the urgent need for a safe environment where residents could engage in fitness and recreational activities.
To pursue the project, MURWDF members including Renuka Suryavanshi, Sunil Koloti, Sunil Aiyer, Sajeev Nair and Sandeep Kolhatkar submitted several representations to the PMC and its Garden Department during 2025. The proposal sought the development of a landscaped public garden that would serve the growing population of the area.
Following multiple site visits and discussions, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram inspected the location and approved it for the project. The Garden Department subsequently confirmed that the land would be developed into a public garden through an appropriate planning and development process.
With work now underway, residents are hopeful that the garden will soon provide a much-needed community space for children, senior citizens, walkers, joggers and fitness enthusiasts.
Citizens have thanked PMC officials for responding to their demand and said they will continue to follow the project’s progress until it is completed.
