Pune 9 June 2026: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has proposed a budget of ₹56 lakh to deploy 50 volunteers during the monsoon season to strengthen its emergency response system. The proposal has been sent to the standing committee and is likely to be discussed this week.

According to civic officials, the volunteers will be recruited from certified fire brigade personnel, civil defence volunteers and Aapda Mitras. They will be posted at different ward offices and will assist the civic body in handling monsoon-related emergencies.

Under the proposal, each volunteer will receive a monthly honorarium of ₹22,485 for five months. Officials said the move is aimed at improving emergency response during the rainy season, when incidents such as flooding, waterlogging and tree falls become more common.

PCMC had launched the initiative on a pilot basis last year by deploying 30 volunteers with the fire brigade. Based on the experience, the civic body has decided to increase the number of volunteers this year.

Officials said the volunteers will work with the disaster management department’s Quick Response Teams and help coordinate emergency operations with ward offices. However, they will not be involved in high-risk rescue missions.

Instead, the volunteers will assist trained municipal staff by attending emergency calls, helping manage situations on the ground and supporting relief work during heavy rainfall and other emergencies.

“Due to increased emergency calls during the monsoon and a shortage of manpower, these volunteers will help strengthen our disaster response efforts,” a PCMC official said.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Tanaji Narale said the proposal follows the Centre’s guidelines on monsoon disaster preparedness. He added that the proposal has already been cleared by the law committee and is awaiting final approval from the standing committee.

Officials also said the appointments were originally planned to begin on June 1. However, the process was delayed because of the Model Code of Conduct for the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections.
