Who Truly Invented Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani? Delhi High Court to Decide
In a culinary dispute that has caught the attention of food enthusiasts, the Delhi High Court is set to resolve the question of who deserves credit for the invention of two iconic Indian dishes – Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani. Moti Mahal and Daryaganj restaurants find themselves in a legal battle, each claiming to be the originator of these beloved recipes.
Moti Mahal, a renowned establishment, took legal action against Daryaganj after the latter used the tagline “Inventors of Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani.” This legal tussle has brought to light a longstanding rivalry between the two restaurants, both asserting their unique claims to the culinary heritage.
The crux of the matter lies in the alleged misrepresentation by Daryaganj, which Moti Mahal accuses of misleading people into believing an association between the two establishments. The lawsuit contends that Daryaganj falsely implies a connection with Moti Mahal, originally situated in the Daryaganj neighborhood of Delhi.
The dispute revolves around the originators of these iconic dishes. Daryaganj attributes the creation to Late Kundan Lal Jaggi, while Moti Mahal credits their predecessor, Late Kundal Lal Gujral. The Delhi High Court, represented by Judge Sanjeev Narula, heard the case on January 16, requiring the defendants from Daryaganj to respond within 30 days.
However, Daryaganj’s legal representatives have dismissed the case as “baseless and lacking a cause of action.” They argue that both parties share a common ancestry, tracing back to the original Moti Mahal restaurant in Peshawar.
Moti Mahal asserts that Gujral, their ancestor, not only invented the first Tandoori Chicken but also introduced Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani to India post the country’s partition. The lawsuit details Gujral’s inventive approach to prevent his cooked chicken from drying out, leading to the creation of a sauce and subsequently, Dal Makhani.
Daryaganj, on the other hand, maintains its claim as the inventor of these culinary delights, prominently advertising it on their official website. The legal battle brings into focus not just a clash of recipes but the cultural and historical significance attached to these cherished dishes. As the Delhi High Court takes on the responsibility of settling this flavorful dispute, the culinary world eagerly awaits the verdict.
