Pune Municipal Corporation has constructed 46 vegetable markets in the city using taxpayers’ money. Hundreds of crores of rupees have been spent, but these facilities are not being utilized for the benefit of the citizens. Many vegetable markets remain closed, and these locations have become spots where people can be found drinking alcohol and playing cards day and night. Unauthorized businesses are operating in many places, or local representatives have taken over the properties.

Aam Aadmi Party, Pune leaders have demanded to open these vegetable markets for the use of citizens. Sudarshan Jagdale, a senior AAP Pune leader, “We request a thorough investigation into this matter and prompt reopening of the markets for public use. Due to the closure of these markets, citizens are facing unnecessary inconvenience, having to buy vegetables from street vendors and footpaths under the sun and rain. The lack of official vegetable markets has resulted in vendors occupying footpaths, causing traffic jams and hindering pedestrian movement.”

In several areas, well-equipped vegetable markets have been shut down, and weekly markets have been initiated by local representatives in every corner, charging each vegetable vendor. This has led to citizens buying vegetables at inflated prices. In collusion with municipal officials and local representatives, the official vegetable markets have been closed, and citizens are being exploited through these weekly markets.

The Aam Aadmi Party demands information within 8 days regarding the current status of each vegetable market and the reasons for their closure.

It is the municipality’s duty to provide citizens with vegetable markets that are open for at least 12-15 hours daily. We expect you to address this issue and ensure the prompt reopening of closed vegetable markets. If not, the Aam Aadmi Party will hold a protest.
