Autorickshaw Drivers In Pune Overcharge Citizens, Citing Traffic Congestion
Citizens have complained about autorickshaw drivers overcharging them, citing extended travel times due to traffic congestion. The drivers claim that frequent traffic jams result in monetary losses. However, commuters argue that waiting charges are already included in the fare chart, making additional demands unjustified.
Recent incidents have sparked outrage, with commuters sharing their experiences. Krunal Patil was forced to pay Rs 50 extra for a trip from Shivajinagar to Pashan, while senior citizen Asmita Joshi was demanded more money for a trip from Swargate to Hadapsar Road. Amol Paranjape, a frequent commuter, said, “Demanding extra money defeats the purpose of the fare chart.”
Autorickshaw drivers, however, claim that traffic congestion and poor road conditions affect their business. “Travel time has increased by 20-30 minutes, and vehicles break down frequently,” said Anna Patole. Despite this, auto driver unions have distanced themselves from the practice, urging members to follow rules and regulations.
“We remind them to operate as per the fare chart,” said a representative of autorickshaw union. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has taken note of the complaints and will intensify joint drives with traffic police against erring drivers.
Citizens can report complaints on helpline numbers. The RTO assures that action will be taken against drivers flouting rules. Commuters are urged to demand fare chart adherence and report incidents.
By asserting their rights and reporting incidents, citizens can help curb autorickshaw driver overcharging and ensure a fair commute.
