Cyber Fraud in Pune: Man Loses ₹2 Lakh After Calling Fake Bank Helpline From Google
Pune, June 11, 2025 – In two alarming cyber fraud cases reported in Pune, a 58-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were duped of ₹2 lakh and over ₹7 lakh respectively by scammers posing as customer service executives.
In the first incident, a resident of Gurprasad Society on Bund Garden Road searched for his bank’s customer care number on Google. Unknowingly, he dialed a fake number listed by fraudsters. The caller, posing as a bank representative, convinced him to download an APK file (an app installer). Shortly after installation, the cyber criminals remotely accessed his device and transferred ₹2 lakh from his bank account. The victim immediately filed a complaint at Koregaon Park Police Station. A case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Police are tracing the fraudulent bank account and analyzing the mobile number used.
In a second case, a woman residing in Sarvoday Society on NIBM Road fell prey to a similar scam. She received a call from an unknown person claiming her MNGL gas connection would be disconnected due to non-payment. To verify the bill, she was sent a suspicious link. Upon clicking it, ₹7,04,332 was fraudulently withdrawn from her bank account. Kondhwa Police have registered the case and a cyber team is investigating.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid calling helpline numbers directly from search engines and to never download unknown apps or click on suspicious links.
