Delhi, 28 June 2024 — The onset of monsoon has led to heavy rainfall in several parts of Delhi and surrounding areas, causing significant disruption. One of the major impacts has been the closure of the Pragati Maidan Tunnel, which has been deemed unsafe due to waterlogging.

The tunnel, a high-profile project completed at a cost of ₹777 crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 21. Despite assurances from officials that measures such as a roof on the tunnel ramps, stormwater drains, and an underground sump would prevent waterlogging, the tunnel flooded for several days last year and is experiencing similar issues again this year.

The recurring problem raises questions about the accountability of the maintenance authorities, who reportedly did not undertake necessary repairs despite multiple communications. The tunnel, which serves as a critical link to the Pragati Maidan Convention Centre through its underground parking, remains closed, adding to the monsoon woes of Delhi’s residents.
