The study looked at data from 204,847 participants in the UK Biobank, aged between 40 and 69, with 55% being female. Participants completed a questionnaire asking them to list the types and amounts of foods and drinks they had consumed in the last 24 hours. Over the span of a year, they filled out this questionnaire on five different occasions, giving researchers valuable insights into changes in their dietary habits.
Based on the coffee consumption data, participants were divided into four categories: non-coffee consumers, unsweetened coffee drinkers, sugar-sweetened coffee drinkers, and those who used artificial sweeteners. The findings revealed that 54% of the participants consumed unsweetened coffee, while 24% did not drink coffee at all. Additionally, 16% added sugar to their coffee, and 7% opted for artificial sweeteners.
Interestingly, non-coffee drinkers generally preferred tea. The analysis indicated that those who preferred unsweetened coffee experienced a 29-30% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias, and Parkinson’s disease. They also had a 43% reduced risk of dying from these conditions compared to non-coffee drinkers.
In contrast, individuals who consumed sweetened or artificially sweetened coffee did not see a decrease in the risk of these diseases or mortality.
Among the unsweetened coffee drinkers, those who chose decaffeinated coffee had an even more significant reduction in risk, with a 34-37% lower risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and a 47% lower risk of mortality related to these conditions, compared to non-coffee drinkers.
