Pune: Ophthalmologists have observed a surge in cases of allergic conjunctivitis in correlation with the rise in air pollution levels in the city. The overall air quality index has exceeded 100, indicating a decline in the city’s air quality.
The city of Pune is currently experiencing a moderate level of air pollution, as indicated by the Air Quality Index (AQI) of 125, according to monitoring data from IITM. This increase in pollution is attributed to a layer of white smog, which is a combination of smoke, fog, and dust. SAFAR-IITM data shows that the AQI has risen from a satisfactory level of 57 on October 1 to the current moderate level.
The highest AQI was recorded on October 18 at 143. In both the early morning and the evening, a discernible layer of smog is apparent, creating a winter-like atmosphere of fog. Nevertheless, individuals who have been regularly exposed to this smog during their morning exercise or while driving are encountering discomfort, along with inflammation in their eyes.
