Poppies are fast becoming a favourite for home gardeners across India and beyond. Known for their bright colours and soft, papery petals, these flowers are easy to grow and work well in many types of spaces, from full-sun gardens to cool, shady corners.

There are many types of poppies, each suited to different growing conditions. The Opium Poppy is popular for its large, bowl-shaped flowers in white, pink, purple, and lavender. Its silvery leaves add contrast; even after the flower fades, the seed pods are often used in dry flower arrangements. It grows best in sunny spots with well-drained soil.

The Oriental Poppy, a perennial, produces large, silky blooms in late spring. It comes in red, orange, pink, and white, often with dark centres. While it dies in summer, it returns the next year and thrives in full sunlight.

The bright red Corn Poppy, also called the Flanders Poppy, symbolises remembrance. Easy to grow and loved by bees and butterflies, it suits wild gardens and open spaces. It blooms in late spring and spreads naturally.

The California Poppy is perfect for dry, warm areas. It blooms from spring to fall in shades of yellow, orange, and pink. This low-maintenance flower reseeds itself and is ideal for rock gardens and borders.

In cooler climates, the Iceland Poppy brings soft colours like coral, white, and pale orange. It prefers slightly moist soil and blooms in spring, doing well in containers and garden edges.

The rare Himalayan Blue Poppy needs more care but rewards gardeners with sky-blue flowers and golden centres. It grows best in shaded, cool areas with rich, moist soil.

The Moroccan Poppy is a tough plant for hot, dry areas. It blooms in orange and apricot shades through the summer and reseeds easily.

Lastly, the Wind Poppy grows well in partial shade. Native to California, it adds movement and colour to woodland-style gardens.

No matter the climate or garden size, there is a poppy that can grow well and brighten up the space.
