GBs Outbreak: Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Takes Stern Action, Shuts Down 10 RO Plants and 7 RO Water ATMs
Pimpri, February 8, 2025 – The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated strict action to curb the spread of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) by inspecting unauthorized private RO plants involved in bottling contaminated water. As part of this drive, the corporation took action against 10 such RO plants today and ordered their immediate closure, according to PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh.
Amid rising public health concerns and the spread of GBS, PCMC has been conducting water quality checks at private RO plants. Inspections revealed that unauthorized water operators were bottling and distributing contaminated water sourced from borewells and open water bodies. To protect public health and prevent future risks, the civic body has launched a stringent crackdown on unauthorized water bottling and RO plants supplying unsafe drinking water.
Action Taken Across Wards
Under the guidance of Water Supply Department’s Assistant City Engineer Ajay Suryavanshi, a team comprising sub-engineers, junior engineers, and plumbers inspected the plants across different regional offices. The action included:
- – F Regional Office – 2 RO plants
- – D Regional Office – 2 RO plants and 7 RO water ATMs
- – B Regional Office – 1 RO plant
- – G Regional Office – 4 RO plants
- – H Regional Office – 1 RO plant
The municipal medical department will impose strict penalties on violators who fail to comply with the closure orders. Chief Engineer of the Water Supply Department, Pramod Ombhase, emphasized that ensuring clean and safe drinking water for citizens is a top priority. Given the critical role of water in public health, the municipal body will continue thorough quality inspections and take necessary action against unauthorized operations.
