Good News: First Mango of the Season Arrive at Pune's Market Yard, Box Sold for ₹31,000
The wait is over for mango enthusiasts in Pune as the first box of Kesar mangoes of the season arrived at the Market Yard Fruit Market, creating a buzz among locals. The premium box, containing five dozen mangoes sourced from farmer Saad Mulla of Devgad, fetched an impressive ₹31,000 during an auction.
Highlights of the Season’s First Mangoes
The mangoes, brought to the market by trader and director Bapu Bhosale, were auctioned in the presence of senior BJP leader and several traders. Raosaheb Kunjir emerged as the highest bidder, purchasing the coveted box. This event marks the official start of the mango season in Pune, with expectations of a bountiful harvest in the weeks to come.
Popularity of Konkan Mangoes in Pune
Punekars have a deep love for mangoes, particularly the Alphonso from the Konkan region. Each year, large quantities of mangoes are imported into Pune’s metropolitan marketplaces to meet the high demand. However, buyers are urged to exercise caution as counterfeit Alphonso mangoes often make their way into the market.
Pune APMC’s Measures to Combat Fake Mango Sales
The Pune Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) has taken stringent steps to address fraudulent practices. Teams have been deployed to inspect mango consignments and penalize traders found selling fake Alphonso mangoes. In 2024, APMC officials seized counterfeit Alphonsos from at least three traders who were passing off South Indian mangoes as premium varieties from the Konkan belt.
