Pune :Â According to reports, Google has cut numerous positions within its news division due to sluggish growth and uncertain economic conditions. An Alphabet Workers Union spokesperson revealed that approximately 40-45 workers in Google News have been laid off.
In response to the layoffs, a company spokesperson stated that Google remains committed to fostering a vibrant information ecosystem and views news as a long-term investment. The company made internal changes to streamline its organization, resulting in a small number of employees being affected.
Google is providing support to these individuals during their transition period, including outplacement services and severance. Despite the layoffs, Google News still employs hundreds of people and continues to provide links to articles from thousands of publishers and magazines. The news of the layoffs was met with disappointment, as a staff engineer at Google News expressed that the company is worse off without the talented individuals who were let go.
In January, Google announced a reduction of 12,000 jobs, which impacted approximately 6% of its full-time workforce. Additionally, last month, the company eliminated several positions within its recruiting organization, citing a decrease in the volume of recruitment requests. Google has chosen not to disclose the exact number of employees affected by these cuts, but a spokesperson emphasized that the company is supporting those impacted with a transition period, outplacement services, and severance as they search for new opportunities both within Google and elsewhere. These reductions in hiring and workforce size reflect Google’s response to the global economic slowdown.
