An event can sometimes change your life completely in just a moment. It might come as a realization or through important information. Ramveer Singh, who is from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, had a similar life-changing experience.

In 2009, Ramveer’s friend’s uncle was diagnosed with cancer. After doing thorough research, he found out that the cancer was linked to a vegetable contaminated with chemicals.

Initially frightened by this discovery, Ramveer decided he would do everything possible to protect his family from such risks. As a former full-time journalist, he made the bold choice to leave his job and focus on growing organic vegetables on his family’s land. “The farm is 40 km from Bareilly, and I went there to cultivate vegetables and improve the land’s productivity,” he explained.

He then took up freelance journalism while also starting to sell organic produce professionally.

Why did he opt for hydroponics as his farming method?

In 2017-18, he participated in an agriculture program in Dubai where he learned about hydroponics. He was excited to find out that this farming technique doesn’t require soil, has fewer pest issues, and conserves about 80% of the water needed for plant growth.

Ramveer dedicated two weeks to learning farming techniques from local farmers. When he returned home, he was eager to implement these agricultural practices. Now, driven by his passion for hydroponics, he has transformed his three-story house into a hydroponics farm and is generating millions from it.

How did he set it up?

He started by arranging hydroponics systems on his balconies and open areas using pipes and various equipment. He implemented the nutrient film technique (NFT) and deep flow technology (DFT) to create two systems for his farm. Currently, the farm occupies 750 square meters and hosts over 10,000 plants.

Among the vegetables he cultivates are okra, chilies, capsicum, bottle gourd, tomatoes, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, strawberries, fenugreek, and green peas. “I use hydroponics to grow all of my seasonal crops. The system consists of PVC pipes that rely on gravity to circulate the water. By adding nutrients like magnesium, copper, phosphorus, nitrogen, zinc, and others into the flowing water, the setup ensures that around 16 essential nutrients reach the plants. This method saves 90% of the water used,” he explains.

Ramveer considers hydroponic farming to be healthier and more effective than organic farming. He states, “I believe that vegetables cultivated under hydroponics have a higher nutritional absorption rate. Furthermore, there is no risk of soil contamination since a neighboring farmer who practices chemical farming may expose soil or plants to chemicals or pesticides while spraying chemicals or pesticides in conventional farming. Hydroponics farming is free of dangerous chemicals.”

His unique farm, which features a concrete building adorned with vegetables hanging over the edges, has attracted the attention of passers-by. As a result of his efforts, he established the Vimpa Organic and Hydroponics enterprise, which generates an impressive annual income of Rs 70 lakh.
