Lohegaon Sizzles at 42.7°C Amid Heatwave – Pune Records Season’s Hottest Day, IMD Warns of Heat Stress

Pune | April 16, 2025 – The sweltering summer heat tightened its grip on Pune as temperatures soared to a scorching 42.7°C in Lohegaon on Tuesday, marking the hottest day of the season so far. The severe heatwave conditions left citizens reeling, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) urging the public to take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.
Shivajinagar also witnessed a significant rise in mercury, recording 41.3°C, the first time it has crossed the 41-degree mark this season. Other parts of the city such as Koregaon Park (41.4°C), Pashan (40.6°C), and Chinchwad (40.3°C) reported similarly harsh conditions.
According to IMD officials, hot winds from the north and clear skies are responsible for the temperature spike. These extreme conditions are expected to persist until Thursday, with some relief likely from Friday as moisture-laden winds from the south may help reduce the heat intensity.
Although no official heatwave alert has been issued — since the temperature deviation from the normal hasn’t exceeded 4.5°C for two consecutive days — the IMD has warned of “heat stress” and advised people to stay indoors between 11 am and 4 pm, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
The heatwave conditions are not confined to Pune alone. Other regions of Maharashtra are experiencing similar extremes, with Solapur touching 42.8°C, Akola at 44.1°C, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) registering 41.6°C.
With no immediate respite in sight, residents are bracing for a few more days of intense heat as summer peaks across the region.
