Maharashtra Govt To Take Suo Moto Action Against 860 IVF Centres After Badlapur Egg-Selling Racket Exposed
Badlapur, Maharashtra, March 5, 2026: The Government of Maharashtra has ordered a statewide investigation into all IVF centres following the exposure of an alleged illegal human egg-selling racket in Badlapur. The decision was taken by the government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, placing authorities on high alert.
According to officials, joint inspection teams from the police and the health department will examine the operations of 860 In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) centres across the state. Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken if any irregularities or violations are found.
During the investigation into the Badlapur case, a connection to Nashik also emerged. Following this lead, the Nashik Municipal Corporation cancelled the licence of Malti IVF Centre and sealed the facility. Important documents were seized during the operation.
Police arrested the centre’s director, Dr. Amol Patil, who is accused of acting as an agent arranging surrogate mothers. He is expected to be produced in court, and investigators believe further revelations may emerge during police custody.
Authorities suspect that the racket may extend beyond local networks and could be linked to an international human egg trafficking operation. Investigators alleged that women were lured with money and injected with hormones to stimulate egg production. They were later sent to IVF centres where eggs were extracted through medical procedures and allegedly sold illegally.
Police have registered cases against Sulakshana Gadekar, Ashwini Chabukswar, and Manjusha Wankhede in connection with the racket.
Given the seriousness of the case, the state government has directed authorities to conduct a comprehensive audit of IVF centres, including verification of licences, medical procedures, documentation, and financial transactions. Officials say more shocking details may emerge as the investigation progresses.
