Maharashtra Orders Toll Exemption for Electric Vehicles Within 8 Days; Refunds to Begin Immediately
Maharashtra, December 2025: Electric vehicle (EV) users across Maharashtra are set to receive long-awaited relief as State Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar has directed authorities to implement toll exemptions for EVs within the next eight days. He also ordered that any toll amounts collected so far be refunded without delay.
The directive came during an assembly discussion after MLA Shankar Jagatap raised concerns over the prolonged delay in enforcing the state government’s earlier promise of toll-free access for EVs. Responding firmly, Speaker Narwekar stated that the government must honour its commitment and ensure EVs are no longer charged at toll booths statewide.
Narwekar instructed that all toll plazas halt toll collection from EVs within eight days, emphasising, “The government announced toll exemptions for electric vehicles, and it must now follow through. Toll charges must be waived across the state and the collected amounts should be refunded to EV owners immediately.”
Push for Expansion of EV Charging Network
Beyond toll waivers, Narwekar also stressed the urgent need to expand the state’s EV charging infrastructure. With electric vehicle adoption growing steadily, he highlighted that Maharashtra must increase the number of charging stations and upgrade existing facilities to meet rising demand.
“To support the increasing number of EV users, the charging network must be strengthened. More stations need to be set up, and current ones must be enhanced to ensure adequate capacity,” he said.
Government Cites Technical Delays
Maharashtra’s Energy Minister Dada Bhuse acknowledged that the toll exemption rollout had been delayed due to technical issues. He assured the assembly that corrective measures were underway and that the system would be fully functional soon.
The Speaker’s directive has renewed optimism among EV owners, who have been awaiting the financial and operational benefits of toll-free travel since the policy was first announced.
