Pune: In response to rising water pollution and the gap between sewage generation and treatment, Siddhesh Kadam, Chairman of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to present a time-bound action plan for establishing sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the city. Additionally, the PMC has been asked to implement measures to treat sewage at its source until the STPs are operational.

The directives came during a joint meeting held on January 21 at the PMC, attended by officials including PMC Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale and MPCB representatives. Discussions focused on critical issues like sewage treatment, solid waste management, air pollution, and single-use plastic.

Kadam emphasized that PMC must bridge the gap between sewage generation and treatment to curb water pollution. He also called for monitoring commercial complexes and resorts near Khadakwasla Dam and newly merged villages, penalizing violators of environmental norms. Efforts to secure state government land for STP projects will also be expedited.

The meeting addressed air pollution concerns, urging PMC to adopt guidelines from Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and explore a potential ban on new commercial ready-mix plants in Pune. Joint operations between PMC and MPCB were proposed, with violators facing fines.
