Mumbai – Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Monday that the long-pending Mumbai-Goa highway project will be completed by June this year. The statement brings hope to commuters and travellers to the Konkan region, who have faced years of difficulties due to pothole-ridden and incomplete roads.

Speaking at the Vasant Vyakhyanmala event organised by Amar Hind Mandal in Dadar, Gadkari said, “There were numerous difficulties with the Mumbai-Goa highway. But do not worry, we will complete the road 100 per cent by this June.” He added that all major hurdles in the project have now been cleared.

In a significant policy shift, the Union Minister also announced that the central government is set to introduce a new toll policy within the next 15 days. The new system will replace physical toll booths with advanced technologies such as satellite-based tracking and automatic number plate recognition. Toll charges will be automatically deducted from vehicle owners’ bank accounts.

Gadkari stated that the move aims to streamline toll collection, reduce congestion at toll plazas, and address public grievances related to manual toll systems. He further said, “In the next two years, India’s road infrastructure will be better than that of the United States.”

The Mumbai-Goa highway has been under construction for over a decade, plagued by delays and interruptions. With this latest assurance from the Union Minister, the project is expected to finally reach completion, boosting connectivity and easing travel to coastal Maharashtra.
