Pune: In preparation for the upcoming assembly polls, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Jammu & Kashmir to conduct a month-long door-to-door voter registration drive. This initiative aims to ensure accurate and updated electoral rolls in these states.
The electoral authorities in Maharashtra are set to commence this crucial exercise starting Tuesday, following the directive issued by the ECI on Friday. Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) have been tasked with overseeing the comprehensive updating and cleaning up of voter registration lists.
The drive will span one month, during which Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit voters’ homes to register eligible individuals within the state. This effort is crucial as the term of Maharashtra’s current legislative assembly concludes on November 26, necessitating elections before the term expires.
An official from the state CEO’s office emphasized, “The second special summary revision of electoral rolls will commence from July 1 to ensure accurate registrations across the state.”
The Additional Chief Electoral Officer affirmed that the election machinery would mobilize promptly to fulfill the directives. During the recent Lok Sabha polls, Maharashtra recorded a registration of 9.24 crore voters, underscoring the significance of maintaining up-to-date electoral records for fair and transparent elections.
