Pune: A caretaker hired to look after an ailing elderly man allegedly threatened to leak a video of the senior citizen on social media and demanded Rs 5 lakh in extortion. The incident came to light following a complaint registered at the Alankar Police Station.

A lawyer lodged the complaint against the accused, identified as Suraj Rajendra Pawar (32), a resident of Jainapur, Kolhapur. According to the complaint, the victim’s family, residing in Kothrud, had hired a caretaker to tend to the bedridden elderly man. The original caretaker, upon returning to Kolhapur for personal reasons, sent Suraj Pawar as a replacement to continue the care duties.

While working in the household, Pawar allegedly took photos and videos of the elderly man on his mobile phone under the pretext of caregiving. He later threatened to share these images and videos on social media and to send them to the family members’ phones unless he was paid Rs 5 lakh.
