Pune: FDA Cracks Down On Blood Banks: 29 Licenses Suspended, 1 Cancelled
In a major crackdown, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licenses of 29 blood banks and cancelled the license of one blood bank in the Pune region. The action was taken after an inspection revealed illegal inter-state bulk transfers of blood and its components.
The inspection, conducted between April and November this year, was prompted by a severe shortage of blood reported by blood banks in the Pune region, which includes Pune, Solapur, Satara, Sangli, and Kolhapur. During the inspection, 81 blood banks were inspected, and show-cause notices were issued to 32 blood banks.
Girish Hukare, joint commissioner, FDA (Drug) Pune Region stated while talking to the media person about the issue that, the illegal bulk transfers disrupted the local supply of blood, worsening shortages in a critical situation. “This year, due to general and assembly elections, Diwali, and summer vacation, the number of blood donations drastically declined,” he added.
The FDA’s action is aimed at ensuring that blood banks operate within the guidelines set by the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC) and the State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC). The SBTC has issued a circular banning inter-state bulk transfers of blood and blood components until January 31, 2025, or until the situation in the state is eased.
The FDA’s crackdown on blood banks is a welcome move, as it will help ensure that blood banks operate transparently and within the guidelines set by regulatory authorities. This will ultimately benefit patients who rely on blood transfusions to save their lives.
