Pimpri, March 23, 2026: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has been served a notice by the Maharashtra Irrigation Department seeking payment of ₹143 crore, which includes pending water supply charges and penalties for alleged lapses in sewage treatment, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Pimpri-Chinchwad’s primary water source is the Pavana Dam. The civic body draws approximately 550 million litres per day (MLD) of raw water from the Ravet weir on the Pavana River. The water is treated at purification plants in Nigdi and Pradhikaran before being distributed across the city.

According to the notice, the civic body reportedly treats only 275 MLD of sewage despite having a treatment capacity of 345 MLD, with untreated water discharged into the river. The department also claimed that treated water is not being reused adequately for irrigation purposes. Officials warned that continued non-payment could lead to a cut in the city’s water supply.

The irrigation department also raised concerns that the civic body may be drawing more water than its sanctioned quota, potentially risking shortages during summer. PCMC officials, however, stated that water lifting remains within approved limits.
