In a move that will benefit thousands of students and commuters, Maha Metro and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have agreed to construct a new Metro station at Balajinagar on the Swargate-Katraj route.

The new station, which will be the fourth on the Swargate-Katraj stretch, will cater to the needs of local commuters and a large number of college students from the Bharati Vidyapeeth area. Maha Metro will bear the cost of constructing the new station.

The proposal for the additional station was discussed by the PMC’s standing committee, which gave its nod for the project. Local MLA Bhimrao Tapkir, who had been pushing for the additional station, said that the aim was to ensure that the Metro reached the maximum number of people.

The 5.4km Swargate-Katraj Metro stretch, whose foundation was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September, is expected to begin groundwork in February 2025. Maha Metro officials said that soil testing and other surveys for the stretch had been initiated, and agencies for tunnelling and other works would be appointed soon.

The tunnel of the Katraj-Swargate stretch will be connected to the existing tunnel of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to Swargate Metro stretch in the Swargate area. Maha Metro officials assured that the transition at the Swargate station would be hassle-free, as it had been designed considering future requirements.

The new Metro station at Balajinagar is expected to bring relief to commuters and students, who will no longer have to travel long distances to catch the Metro. With the addition of this new station, Maha Metro is taking a step towards making public transport more accessible and convenient for the people of Pune.
