PUNE, February 9, 2025: Pune River Revival, a group of citizens and social organizations, has organized a Chipko Padyatra to raise awareness about the need to protect trees and green spaces along Pune’s rivers. The event will take place on February 9, 2025, at 3:30 PM.

Inspired by the Chipko Movement, the march aims to highlight the importance of riverside ecosystems, which help prevent floods, maintain groundwater levels, and preserve biodiversity. The padyatra comes at a time when rapid urban development is threatening these natural areas.

Call for Sustainable Development

Participants will urge authorities to ensure that riverfront projects are eco-friendly and do not involve tree cuttingSanjeev Naik, a volunteer with Pune River Revival, emphasized, “Our riverside trees and wetlands are not just part of the landscape; they protect us from floods and help recharge groundwater.”

Arati Mhaskar, a Baner resident, added, “We support riverfront development, but it must be done sustainably, without harming the environment.”
