The ongoing construction of the ‘Missing Link‘ on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is expected to take an additional six months for completion.

The tunnel work remains unfinished, and construction of the cable-stayed bridge in the Tiger Valley area is still underway. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has set a target to complete the bridge by June 2025, which means travelers will have to wait another six months for the project to be operational.

Details of the ‘Missing Link’ Project:

The project is divided into two parts: a tunnel and a cable-stayed bridge.

The tunnel spans approximately 9 kilometers, with some portions still under construction.

The cable-stayed bridge, being constructed at a height of 132 meters, will reduce the distance between Pune and Mumbai by six kilometers once completed.

The project will bypass the Khandala Ghat section, cutting down travel time between the two cities by around 25 minutes. The estimated cost of the project is approximately ₹6,695 crore.

Expressway Expansion:

The expressway, currently a six-lane road, is being widened to an eight-lane road.

Two flyovers are being built as part of the project, one of which is a cable-stayed bridge with a 650-meter span and an 850-meter viaduct. This bridge, constructed 132 meters above the ground, will become the tallest bridge in any Indian road project.

Key Benefits:

  1. Reduced Travel Time: Travel between Pune and Mumbai will be faster by approximately 25 minutes.
  2. Fewer Accidents: Sharp turns will be minimized, enhancing safety.
  3. Improved Traffic Flow: The bypass will help reduce congestion in the Ghat section.
  4. Enhanced Connectivity: The new tunnel and bridge will streamline road travel.

The MSRDC aims to complete all work by June 2025, after which the route will be opened to the public.
