Pune: PMC To Begin Night-Time Garbage Collection To Tackle Late-Night Littering
In response to increasing incidents of garbage being dumped on roads during late-night and early morning hours, Pune Municipal Corporation’s Solid Waste Management Department has decided to initiate night-time garbage collection. To implement this, 81 new garbage collection vehicles have been procured, which will patrol areas known for littering at night. Strict action will be taken against those caught dumping waste during these hours.
The municipal corporation has already removed garbage bins from major roads and public squares, relying instead on mobile collection vehicles that operate throughout the day. Despite this, some residents were found littering late at night or during early morning walks, prompting the new initiative.
To address this issue, dedicated teams have been deployed for surveillance. In addition, a fleet of 351 garbage collection vehicles, including the newly acquired ones, will now operate at night. Vehicles equipped with speakers will also spread awareness among citizens.
Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department, stated that within a week, staff and drivers will be available for the new schedule, ensuring cleaner streets by collecting garbage at night.
