Pune, March 3: In a concerted effort to ease traffic congestion, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), in collaboration with various government agencies, initiated a large-scale encroachment removal drive on Monday (March 3). On the first day of this campaign, authorities cleared 201 encroachments across three key routes, freeing over 20,000 square feet of road space.
To address bottlenecks on national and state highways surrounding Pune, officials have planned a 30-day crackdown on unauthorized shops, structures, and encroachments along both sides of these roads. PMRDA, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), local police, MSRDC, and the Public Works Department (PWD) have jointly scheduled operations for this initiative.

As part of Monday’s operation, PMRDA teams removed encroachments covering a total of 20,100 square feet:
- 78 encroachments (7,800 sq. ft.) between Indrayani River and Berge Vasti on Pune-Nashik Road.
- 70 encroachments (7,000 sq. ft.) along a 1.5 km stretch of Pune-Solapur Road.
- 53 encroachments (5,300 sq. ft.) on both sides of Chandni Chowk-Paud Road, covering 3.5 km.
PMRDA has urged individuals with unauthorized shops, sheds, kiosks, and structures along highways to remove them voluntarily. Last week, Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase chaired a joint meeting with officials from various agencies to strategize the enforcement. The drive is being executed under the supervision of Dr. Mhase, Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil, Superintendent of Police and Vigilance Officer Amol Tambe, and other senior officials, including Dr. Deepti Suryavanshi-Patil (Joint Commissioner), Sanjay Kadam (Project Director, NHAI), Shailaja Patil (Executive Engineer, PCMC), and Sadanand Litke (Executive Engineer, PMC).
Encroachment Removal Statistics (March 3):
- Pune-Nashik Road: 3 km stretch, 78 encroachments cleared (7,800 sq. ft.).
- Pune-Solapur Road: 1.5 km stretch, 70 encroachments cleared (7,000 sq. ft.).
- Chandni Chowk-Paud Road: 3.5 km stretch, 53 encroachments cleared (5,300 sq. ft.).
- Total: 201 encroachments removed, covering 20,100 sq. ft.
PMRDA’s encroachment removal drive will continue over the next 30 days to facilitate smoother traffic movement and urban development in Pune.
