Pune City Police, through an extensive operation, successfully traced and returned 456 lost or misplaced mobile phones to their rightful owners using the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) Portal.

To facilitate reporting of lost or misplaced mobile phones, Pune Police had introduced a “Lost and Found” portal on their official website. Citizens who lost their mobile phones could lodge complaints through this portal and receive an online missing property certificate. Using this certificate and their Aadhaar card, citizens could register their lost phones on the CEIR portal, a central government initiative that helps track and block lost mobile devices.

Upon receiving complaints, the CEIR portal analyzed the IMEI numbers of missing phones and identified active SIM cards being used in these devices. The police then received these details from the portal, enabling them to track and retrieve the lost phones.

A dedicated task force consisting of officers from the Crime Branch, Cyber Police Station, and Computer Department of Pune Police was formed to analyze the data and conduct searches. Over the past month, out of 2,300 complaints, 456 mobile phones were successfully recovered. Efforts are ongoing to trace and retrieve phones located outside Pune as well.
