Pune: Saras Baug To Remain Closed For Two Days; Administration Cites Security Reasons
Pune, May 27, 2026: The city’s iconic Saras Baug and the famous Ganpati temple located within the premises will remain closed for visitors on May 28 and 29. Pune Police have clarified that the decision has been taken due to security concerns.
The sudden announcement has sparked widespread discussion among citizens, especially as the closure comes during the summer vacation period and just before the weekend, when the garden usually witnesses heavy footfall from tourists, devotees, families, and morning walkers.

Initially, reports suggested that the garden would remain shut because of maintenance and repair work. However, authorities later clarified that the closure is purely for security-related reasons. The change in explanation created confusion among citizens, leading to criticism and debate on social media.
Several Pune residents have expressed disappointment over the decision. Many questioned why the entire garden needed to be closed for two full days when maintenance activities are routinely carried out without affecting public access. Citizens have also pointed out that Saras Baug is one of Pune’s most loved public spaces and a key recreational spot in the city.
Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure later issued a clarification regarding the controversy. She stated that the decision to shut Saras Baug was taken by the police administration and not by the municipal corporation alone. According to her, an incorrect message mentioning repair work was initially shared by the social media team but was later corrected after receiving official instructions from the police department.
The mayor further clarified that there is no connection between the closure of Saras Baug and Bakri Eid. She stated that the police may have taken the precautionary measure to ensure law and order and avoid any untoward incidents. Citizens have been urged not to believe rumors and to cooperate with the administration.
Saras Baug is considered one of Pune’s most popular landmarks and attracts thousands of visitors every day. From devotees visiting the Ganpati temple to families spending their evenings in the garden, the location holds emotional and cultural significance for Pune residents. The two-day closure is therefore expected to affect the routine plans of many citizens across the city.
