Radiology And General Medicine Emerge As Top Choices For MBBS DoctorsÂ
In a significant shift in trends, radiology and general medicine have emerged as the top choices for MBBS doctors pursuing their master’s courses. According to the recently announced NEET PG allocation list 2024, while obstetrics and gynaecology remain the most commonly allocated branch of medicine due to the high availability of seats, radiology and general medicine have become the most preferred choices among top-ranked students.
Senior doctors attribute this shift to the growing importance of work-life balance among young doctors. “Many of our younger colleagues now prioritize work-life balance,” said the professor of medicine. “Radiology, which was once considered a paramedical field, has emerged as a desired option.”
The rise in demand for radiologists can be attributed to the increasing importance of proactive screenings, the emergence of interventional radiology as a super-specialty branch, and the growing interest among health startups to combine AI and radiology for faster disease detection.
According to the NEET-PG counselling seats allotment (round 1), out of the top 100 all-India ranks, 45 students chose radiodiagnosis, and 46 chose general medicine. These seats were allocated at reputed medical colleges, including Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Delhi, and BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad.
Experts warn that this shift may widen the gap between supply and demand in the medical field. Infectious and non-communicable diseases such as diabetes are still the biggest burdens on India’s health systems, so we need good MBBS doctors at the village level, said another professor. Unfortunately, the mushrooming of private hospitals has led young doctors to pick a branch that gets them a high-paying job.
The trend is expected to continue, with radiology and general medicine emerging as the top choices for MBBS doctors. As the medical field continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this shift will impact the healthcare landscape in India.
