A large-scale search operation is underway for renowned Assamese music composer Ramen Barua, who has been missing for two days after leaving home following an altercation with a family member
A massive search operation is currently underway for renowned Assamese music composer Ramen Barua, who has been missing for two days. The 84-year-old left his home in Guwahati’s Latasil area on Monday morning following an altercation with a family member and was last seen near the Brahmaputra river.
Police Commissioner Diganta Barah stated that Barua was last seen on CCTV footage at 10:08 am on the road leading to the Brahmaputra near the new Gauhati High Court building. His mobile phone was tracked until 10:09 am and K-9 units led investigators to the riverbank. Barah mentioned that there is evidence Barua reached the riverbank but there is no proof of his return from there.
“We are not concluding that any unfortunate incident may have happened, but we are taking all angles into consideration. The SDRF is conducting a thorough search in the downstream of the river from Guwahati to Dhubri,” said Barah.
Several people, including his daughter Barnika Barua and his brother, renowned singer Dwipen Baruah, have been questioned as part of the investigation. Barah mentioned that Barua left home emotionally upset after the altercation with a family member, though he did not specify who it was.
The disappearance of Barua, a respected radio artiste and composer for several Assamese films such as Dr Bezbarua, Baruar Songsar, Mukuta, Lalita and Kokadeuta Nati Aru Hati, has prompted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to direct city police to mobilize all resources and take swift action to locate him.
A missing person complaint was filed by his family after Barua did not return home on Monday evening. The search operation continues, with hopes of finding Barua safe and sound.
