Rat Menace in Pune University Hostels: ABVP Warns of Protest Over Negligence
Pune: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is grappling with a severe rat infestation, causing distress among students, faculty, and staff. The issue is particularly alarming in hostels, where students have reported property damage and health risks due to the unchecked rodent menace.
Despite repeated complaints, the university administration has allegedly failed to take action, leading to a growing crisis. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has strongly condemned the negligence and warned of protests if the issue is not resolved immediately.
Students Show Rabies Symptoms After Rat Bites
Two students from Hostel No. 6 have shown symptoms of rabies after suffering multiple rat bites. One of the affected students had to be hospitalized for two days due to severe injuries on his leg. Doctors raised concerns about possible infections, further intensifying fears among the student community.
Students from the Hindi and Economics departments have made several attempts to meet the chief hostel warden regarding the infestation. However, their grievances have reportedly been ignored for months. A formal complaint was lodged three months ago, but no action was taken.
Students Demand Immediate Action
The infestation has led to the destruction of food, clothing, and books in multiple hostels. Students have put forth the following urgent demands:
- Immediate relocation of affected students to safer accommodations
- Comprehensive pest control measures across all hostels
- Strict hygiene protocols to prevent further infestation
With growing frustration over administrative inaction, ABVP has issued a stern warning that they will stage a protest if corrective measures are not implemented promptly. The situation continues to escalate, with students urging the university to prioritize their safety before it leads to a larger health crisis.
