Satara: New Mahabaleshwar Hill Station Project Gains Momentum

The ambitious project to develop a new Mahabaleshwar Hill Station near the renowned cold spot in Satara district is gaining traction. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has made significant progress, with base maps and land use maps completed for 58 of the 235 villages involved. LiDAR surveys and land verification for the remaining 177 villages have also been finalized. As soon as the model code of conduct ends, MSRDC will begin drafting a development plan.
Designated as the special planning authority for this project in 2019, MSRDC aims to alleviate the increasing tourist pressure on the existing Mahabaleshwar hill station. The new hill station will span approximately 748 sq km in Satara district, extending to the Sangli district limits. Located at an altitude of around 1200 meters above sea level in the Sahyadri range, the area features tributaries like Solshi, Urmodi, and Kandati, along with the scenic Koyna backwater, making it a prime location for development.
The project plan emphasizes the protection and conservation of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve and other eco-sensitive areas. It includes creating buffer zones and migration corridors around reserves and wildlife sanctuaries to protect rare species. The Kaas Plateau, known for its seasonal wildflowers and endemic butterfly species, will receive special attention. Efforts will also focus on enhancing the fertility and greenery of Shiv Sagar Lake, Urmodi, Tapola, and the Koyna BackWater area.
Anil Kumar Gaikwad, Managing Director of MSRDC, stated that once the base map is completed, the intention to prepare a draft development plan will be announced. This plan, incorporating the existing land use map, will be published for public objections and suggestions before finalization. The new Mahabaleshwar Hill Station is set to become a major tourist attraction, providing a new, picturesque destination and easing the burden on the existing Mahabaleshwar.
