Pune: A disturbing incident at Pune’s historic Sinhagad Fort has triggered widespread outrage on social media. A video showing a group of local youths coercing a foreign tourist from New Zealand into using abusive Marathi words has gone viral, drawing criticism from Shivaji Maharaj’s followers and citizens alike.

The foreign tourist, who had come to experience the rich history of the Maratha empire and explore the famed Sinhagad Fort, encountered a group of young men during his trek. Instead of welcoming the visitor with warmth and respect—a hallmark of Maharashtra’s culture—the youths taught him obscene Marathi abuses and encouraged him to repeat them, laughing as he unknowingly obliged.

In the viral video, the tourist appears initially unaware of the meaning of the words he’s being told to say. However, as the group’s laughter grew louder with each word, it seems the tourist gradually realized something was amiss. Reports suggest that he later expressed regret over the incident, allegedly stating that he would not visit the location again.

The act has been widely condemned as a blot on Maharashtra’s reputation for hospitality, particularly the values of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (Guest is God). Many have pointed out that instead of showcasing the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, these miscreants disrespected both a guest and the culture.

The video was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by workers of MP Omraje Nimbalkar, sparking calls for action against the offenders. Citizens are now demanding strict measures to prevent such disrespectful behavior at heritage sites.
