Suspicious Behavior Leads Customs to Seize Rs 2.25 Crore Worth of Marijuana from Delhi Man Arrived from Bangkok at Mumbai Airport
A 25-year-old man from Delhi, who arrived from Bangkok at Mumbai International Airport on Sunday, was arrested for smuggling marijuana valued at Rs 2.25 crore. The contraband was hidden between clothes in his trolley bag.
Mumbai customs’ air intelligence unit intercepted the passenger, identified as Sameer Abbasi, on suspicion of smuggling narcotics. Abbasi, a salesman from Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, had traveled on a Thai Airlines flight.
During their search, officials found multiple plastic packets hidden among Abbasi’s clothes and personal belongings. Upon opening these packets, they discovered a green substance, which tested positive for marijuana using a narcotics field drug testing kit.
A total of 4.97 kg of marijuana was seized from Abbasi’s luggage. Following hours of interrogation, Abbasi was arrested on Monday morning. According to customs department sources, Abbasi smuggled the drugs for a significant commission. Investigations are ongoing to determine if he has a history of similar activities and to identify his handlers.
Abbasi faces charges under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. In a related incident, a woman named Fiza Khan from Chembur was arrested on Saturday at Mumbai airport with nearly Rs 2 crore worth of marijuana, also smuggled from Bangkok. Authorities are investigating any potential connections between the two cases.
