The stag beetle’s rarity, unique features, and cultural significance drive its high value, with prices reaching up to ₹75 lakh.

The stag beetle, one of the world’s most expensive insects, fetching prices as high as ₹75 lakh. This hefty price tag is attributed to its rarity and the belief that it brings good luck. Some even thinking it can lead to sudden wealth.

These insects, thriving in warm climates, are renowned for their unique physical traits, including enlarged mandibles and male polymorphism. A recent study in the a scientific journal, it highlighted their importance in forest ecosystems. The study describes them as a “significant saproxylic assemblage.” Male stag beetles use their antler-like mandibles to compete for mating opportunities during the breeding season.

Adult stag beetles primarily consume sweet liquids such as tree sap and juice from rotting fruit, relying on energy reserves accumulated during their larval stage. Their larvae feed on dead wood, using sharp jaws to scrape and extract splinters. This makes them harmless to living trees and shrubs.

According to the London-based Natural History Museum, stag beetles weigh between 2-6 grams and have a lifespan of 3-7 years. Males typically measure 35-75mm in length, while females range from 30-50mm. In addition, these insects also have applications in medicinal practices.

The stag beetle’s name is derived from the male’s distinctive mandibles, resembling a stag’s antlers. These beetles naturally inhabit woodlands but can also be found in hedgerows, traditional orchards, and urban areas like parks and gardens where dead wood is abundant. Sensitive to cold temperatures, stag beetles thrive in warm, tropical environments.

Their unique characteristics and significant roles in forest ecosystems make stag beetles highly valuable. Their unique characteristics contribute towards their high market price and esteemed status in various cultures.
