Think Your Diet Is Safe? 3 Everyday Foods That Could Harm Your Liver
Your liver works tirelessly every day — filtering toxins, aiding digestion, and keeping your immune system strong. Yet without realizing it, many of us include foods in our daily meals that quietly damage this vital organ. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard and Stanford-trained liver and gut health specialist, warns against three common items he completely avoids — and you might find them in your own kitchen.

1. Vegetable Oils High in Omega-6 (Soybean, Corn, Sunflower Oils)
These oils are everywhere — from home-cooked meals to packaged snacks. While our bodies do need omega-6 fatty acids, an excess (especially without enough omega-3) can lead to chronic inflammation. Persistent inflammation strains the liver, increasing the risk of fatty liver disease and oxidative damage over time.

2. Packaged Fruit Juices
Despite their “100% juice” labels, these drinks often contain high amounts of fructose and little to no fiber. The liver is responsible for processing most of the fructose we consume; too much can cause fat to accumulate in the liver, paving the way for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Whole fruits are a far better choice.

3. Soft Drinks and Sugary Beverages
Sodas and other sweetened drinks are among the most harmful for liver health. Loaded with high-fructose corn syrup or refined sugars, they rapidly increase liver fat production, contributing to inflammation and insulin resistance — key factors in the development of fatty liver disease.

Your liver silently supports your health every day. Reducing or avoiding these foods — especially processed oils, sugary drinks, and packaged juices — can help protect it from unnecessary harm.
