Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) rules have been revised, according to a notification released by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). There are now updated forms available for Aadhaar enrollment and updates. For residents and non-residents (NRIs) requesting Aadhaar enrollment or updates, various forms are available.

The goal of these new regulations is to make it easier to update addresses and other demographic information in the Aadhaar system.

The new rules provide users with two easy ways to update data in the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR): they can use the official website/mobile application or go to an enrolment center. On the other hand, the 2016 regulations limited online updates to address modifications alone. Any additional Aadhaar details updates required a trip to the enrolment center.

Interestingly, the new regulations do not list any restrictions, suggesting that in the future, owners of Aadhaar cards might also be able to update extra information online, like mobile numbers.

New forms have taken the place of the old ones for Aadhaar enrollment and updating Aadhaar details. For Aadhaar enrolment, people who are 18 years of age or older, residents and non-residents (as long as they have proof of address in India), must use the recently introduced Form 1. It’s interesting to note that people in this category can update their Aadhaar details using the same Form 1.

The Aadhaar card will only display the declared/approximate birth year if an individual’s age is declared or approximated (without documentary proof of birth date), per the new form. In order to print the entire date of birth on the Aadhaar card, documentation must be presented.

Updates and document verification for Aadhaar enrollment can be completed by the Head of Family (HoF) or through other means. In the latter scenario, the HoF must sign Form 1 and provide their Aadhaar details. NRIs must additionally have an Aadhaar email address. As stated in the instructions for Form 1, no SMS or text message will be sent to an NRI’s non-Indian mobile number. Notably, the only recognized Proof of Identity (POI) for non-resident Indians (NRIs) is a current Indian passport.

For Aadhaar enrollment and updates, these new forms have taken the place of the previous ones:

Form 1: For people who are 18 years of age or older, both residents and non-residents (with proof of address in India). This form is used for updating information as well as for enrollment.

Form 2: Exclusively for NRIs who can provide proof of address outside of India.

Form 3: Intended for children ages 5 to 18 who are residents or non-resident aliens (NRIs) with an Indian address.

Form 4: NRI kids residing in addresses outside of India.

Form 5: For children under five who are residents or non-resident Indians (NRIs) and have an Indian address.

Form 6: For children under five who are NRIs (with an address outside of India).

Form 7: Residency foreign nationals who are 18 years of age or older who want to enroll in or update their Aadhaar are required to provide details about their foreign passport, OCI card, valid long-term visa, Indian visa, and a required email address.

Form 8: For foreign national residents under the age of eighteen.

Form 9: Developed to allow Aadhaar numbers to be canceled after the age of 18.

Aadhaar holders can now update their documents or information within ten years of the Aadhaar generation date, according to the notification. This can be completed in person at an enrolment center or online via the UIDAI website or mobile app. Unlike the 2016 regulations, which prohibited online updates, this one does.

On January 16, 2023, the UIDAI released these modifications, which provide a more thorough and user-friendly method for enrolling in and updating Aadhaar.
