Urban Company launches 15-minute ‘Insta Maids’ at ₹49/hr: Price, cities, benefits; sparks mixed reactions online
Mumbai, March 17 – Urban Company has introduced a new service called Insta Maids, allowing users to book domestic help within 15 minutes at an initial rate of ₹49 per hour. The service, currently in its pilot phase in select Mumbai areas, offers household assistance for tasks such as dishwashing, sweeping, mopping, and meal preparation.
Mixed Reactions on Social Media
The launch has sparked a debate online, with mixed reactions from users. While some have welcomed the convenience and affordability, others have raised concerns over worker exploitation and the terminology used. Critics argue that the term maid is outdated and carries negative connotations, suggesting that a more respectful term should be used.
Additionally, security concerns have been raised about allowing unfamiliar individuals into homes. Many users have questioned the thoroughness of background checks for service providers.
Company’s Response
Urban Company has defended the initiative, stating that the ₹49 hourly rate is an introductory offer, with adjustments planned in the future to ensure fair wages. The company claims that its service providers earn between ₹150-180 per hour and receive benefits such as free health insurance and life and accidental coverage.
Furthermore, partners working at least 132 hours per month (approximately 22 days at 6 hours per day) are guaranteed a minimum monthly income of ₹20,000.
Future Expansion Plans
Currently, Insta Maids is limited to select Mumbai locations as part of a pilot project. Urban Company plans to expand the service to other cities based on user feedback and the pilot’s success.
The debate surrounding the service highlights broader concerns about fair wages, terminology, and worker protections in India’s rapidly evolving gig economy.
