Pune, March 23, 2026: In a major development for commuters travelling between Pune and the Konkan region, the scenic Varandha Ghat (National Highway 965 DD) may be closed to traffic for up to two months.

The Highway Department has proposed a complete shutdown of the route to speed up pending road work and ensure the safety of travellers. The request has been submitted to the Bhor administration, and a final decision is awaited.

Officials said the stretch between Hirdoshi and Varandha Ghat is particularly narrow and includes several sharp and risky turns. Ongoing concreting work is currently in progress, with some sections already completed. However, beyond Hirdoshi, road widening has become difficult due to geographical constraints—Deoghar Dam lies on one side, while steep mountains border the other.

Authorities have warned that allowing traffic during construction in such conditions could pose serious safety risks.

The contractor aims to complete key phases of the project before the monsoon season begins. Proposals related to forest land approvals have also been submitted and are expected to be cleared soon. Officials have stated that temporarily closing the route is necessary to ensure timely completion of the work.

Administrative processes are currently underway. Dr Vikas Kharat, Sub-Divisional Officer of Bhor, has directed local revenue and police authorities to submit reports. Based on these findings, the district administration will take a final call.

If the closure is implemented, commuters will need to use alternative routes such as Tamhini Ghat or via Poladpur, which may lead to longer travel times. Travellers are now awaiting the administration’s decision.
