Pune, February 11, 2025: A shocking video from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has surfaced, showing an employee contaminating drinking water at the Adarsh Canteen. The footage, which has sparked outrage, captures the worker dipping his feet into the water cooler and using the extracted water to clean the floor.

This incident raises serious hygiene concerns, as the same water is consumed by students, staff, and visitors. The university’s canteens have already been under scrutiny following multiple complaints about unhygienic conditions, including cockroaches in food and rat infestations.

Health Concerns Amid GBS Outbreak

Amidst rising cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Maharashtra, the safety of drinking water has become a major concern. Health officials have advised citizens to boil water before consumption.

Reacting to the incident, Rahul Sasane, President of the University Student Struggle Action Committee (Maharashtra), said, “There are frequent cases of worms and cockroaches in canteen food at SPPU. Now, a new video has emerged showing an employee contaminating drinking water. This is a serious issue, and strict action should be taken against the worker involved.”

Call for Action

Sasane further stated that sanitation staff should not be allowed to handle drinking water coolers, as their maintenance is contracted to a separate company. He has urged the university administration to take immediate suspension action against the employee responsible.

The video has sparked widespread concern among students and faculty, with many demanding stricter hygiene standards and improved sanitation measures in university facilities.
