Woman Responds to Language Remark in Maharashtra: ‘Mera Khud Ka Ghar Hai Idhar’ (Viral Video)
A video capturing a heated exchange at a roadside ice cream stall in Maharashtra has gone viral, reigniting the long-standing debate over language and regional identity in the state. The clip shows a young woman standing her ground against a man who insists she speak Marathi if she wants to live in Maharashtra.
The confrontation begins with the man questioning the woman, asking, “Do you know Marathi?” She calmly replies, “I don’t know Marathi, so what?” This response appears to irritate the man, who then presses further, demanding that she speak in Marathi. The woman, maintaining her stance, repeats that she simply doesn’t know how to speak the language.

The man then asks about her place of employment, to which the woman responds with a curt, “Why?” The man, seemingly offended, counters with, “What do you mean by why? Why won’t you speak in Marathi?” The woman remains firm in her response, not yielding to his demands.
As the exchange grows more intense, the man raises his voice and questions, “Then why are you living in Maharashtra?” The woman retorts, “I live here by choice. I have my own house here,” or in Hindi, “Meri marzi se rehti hu, mera khud ka ghar hai idhar.”
The man, undeterred, tells her to leave the state and continues to probe about her native place. She replies defiantly, “Be it anywhere,” clearly indicating that where she’s from shouldn’t affect her right to live or speak as she chooses in India.
Eventually, the woman escalates her tone and says, “I won’t speak in Marathi, what will you do? I’ll speak in any language I want. It’s my tongue, it’s my wish.”
The video has since sparked a wave of responses on social media. Many are divided, with some criticizing the woman’s attitude and others praising her courage.
One user wrote, “If we continue down this path of linguistic intolerance, we risk creating invisible borders within our own country. And honestly, do we really need more division in a country that already struggles with religious, caste, and political divides? Words should unite, not divide.”
Another person commented, “Good to see India getting back to normalcy,” referring perhaps to the public resistance against such divisive sentiments.
Meanwhile, a different user remarked, “Didi, instead of showing so much arrogance and escalating things, you could’ve just said ‘okay’ and walked away.”
While the exact location and date of the incident remain unknown, the video has undoubtedly reignited the conversation around language rights, freedom of expression, and cultural coexistence in a diverse country like India.
